Education Specialist:

The qualified applicant will conduct education programs such as on-grounds interpretation, classes, and other activities. An Education Specialist interacts with zoo guests on a daily basis in a variety of settings, delivering the educational messages that support the mission of The Living Desert. Education Specialists must be able to answer both general and technical questions about the Zoo and various plants and animals. They must do so with an understanding of various learning styles and an awareness of the principles of good environmental interpretation. In addition to their regular activities, Education Specialists will assist with additional zoo programming when needed and appropriate. This individual will also be assigned to the volunteer office team, assisting with all aspects of volunteer management, including volunteer scheduling. The position is year-round, average 24 hours per week. Must work weekends and have a desire to teach children’s zoo camp.

Minimum Requirements:

The qualified candidate must have the ability to acquire and apply a working knowledge of plants, animals, conservation, learning styles and environmental interpretation. The individual must be guest service oriented, and must also possess a high level of energy and enthusiasm when interacting with zoo guests, co-workers, and volunteers. Good public speaking skills are essential, and bi-lingual capabilities are desirable though not required. Completion of a four-year degree is required. Six months’ experience working with children may be substituted for the required education. Strength to perform average lifting of up to 15 pounds and occasionally over 25 pounds; and the ability to walk and stand for extended periods of time is required.
