Title: Bilingual Domestic Violence Advocate
Classification: Non-Exempt
PT/FT: Full-time 40 hours per week, time-limited-dependent on funding
Reporting: Executive Director
Salary: $18,500 – $26,500 DOE

Position Summary
The Bilingual Domestic Violence Advocate, under the supervision of the Executive Director, will represent the agency to the community by building a bridge to a safe environment through needs assessments, referrals, education, training and collaboration with Riverside County to break the cycle of domestic violence.
Geographic Scope
Western Riverside County from Riverside City to Blythe, and south to Thermal. The office will be located at the Riverside County Courthouse/Family Justice Center in Indio, CA.
Qualifications
- Bilingual, English/Spanish, understanding both written and oral format
- Completion of the 40-hour Domestic Violence training as required by the State of California and the successful completion of an introductory period.
- Ability to work with victims/survivors of domestic violence and their children, especially intimate partner domestic violence victims/survivors
- Knowledge of issues related to family violence, particularly wife/adult partner abuse, child abuse, and teen dating violence
- Knowledge of legal issues related to family violence, the court system, and filing restraining order forms
- Experience in community-based work and resources
- Able to Communicate effectively with supervisors, staff, clients and the community
- Valid California Driver’s license and current California vehicle registration
Desired Characteristics
Skills & Abilities – Public speaking including public presentations; ability to facilitate groups; strong verbal and written skills (English/Spanish); ability to multi-task.
Previous Experience – 2 years in human services; understanding of economic, cultural and racial diversity in the Coachella Valley; basic understanding of the legal system; basic understanding of grants and funding requirements; knowledge of domestic violence.
Personality Traits – Empathetic, good listener, ability to be calm in crisis situations, ability to implement healthy boundaries, sense of humor and can work independently as well as be an essential part of a dynamic team.
Essential Duties
- Provide advocacy, intakes, restraining orders, mandated reporting for child abuse, and crisis intervention
- Maintain accurate client records and agency statistics
- Provide victims with knowledge of Shelter From The Storm services and community referrals
- Assist police and hospital emergency rooms in the provision of services and referrals to battered women/victims of domestic violence
- Maintain a good working relationship with the community at large
- Travel to Riverside and other cities to participate in meetings related to funding and outreach.

Education and/or Experience
Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or two year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Demands
- Lifting – Must be able to exert up to 25 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
- Hearing – must be able to perceive the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Must be able to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make the discrimination in sound.
- Communication – must be able to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word, in both English and Spanish.
