ELEMENTARY PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER


CLASSIFICATION: CERTIFICATED WORK YEAR: 10M/182D/7H


SALARY SCHEDULE: 004

A. Description of Position:


As part of a elementary teaching assignment, teaches one or more classes of physical education to pupils in


grades TK-6, and assists in other school programs as assigned, utilizing district and/or school adopted


curriculum, course outlines, and the California State Frameworks for Physical Education.


B. Supervision Received:


Under the immediate direction of the site administrator.


C. Supervision Exercised:


Instructional Aide, or other as assigned.


D. Prime Duties and Responsibilities:


1. Teaches movement knowledge and movement skills, helps develop the physical and motor fitness attributes


including agility, flexibility, and coordination to elementary pupils. For example, walking, running, hopping,


jumping, galloping, sliding, skipping, catching, throwing, kicking, balancing, bending and stretching. As well


as teaching fitness attributes in cardiorespiratory fitness, and muscular strength and endurance. Teacher will


utilize the district and/or school adopted curriculum, course outlines, and the California State Frameworks for


Physical Education and other appropriate learning activities.


2. Instructs pupils in citizenship, basic communication and other general elements of the course of study


common to all teachers as specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school


district. Work cooperatively with other physical education teachers in planning a balanced physical education


program, adapting daily scheduling to accommodate weather conditions.


3. Analyzes, demonstrates, and explains basic movement skills, movement knowledge, self-image and personal


development, and social development.


4. Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil to


the extent feasible. Provides modified instruction and activities for students with disabilities and or medical


conditions.


5. Provides appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment and field areas to insure the


over-all safety of pupils.


6. Maintains surveillance over storage and use of such items as supplies and equipment to prevent loss and


abuse.


7. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment


in the physical education areas.


8. Evaluates each pupil’s growth in basic body movement such as nonlocomotor and locomotor skills, basic eye-


hand coordination, eyes-foot manipulative skills, balance, and flexibility. Assesses each individual’s


contribution to the performance of the group in group activities. Prepares progress reports and report cards.


Administers California Physical Fitness Test (Grade 5)


9. Maintains professional competence through participation in in-service education workshop and clinics


provided by the district, and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.

E. Other Duties and Responsibilities:


1. Selects and requisitions uniforms, equipment, instructional aids, and instructional supplies, and maintains


required inventory records.


2. Communicates with parents and counselors on the individual pupil progress.


3. Identifies pupil needs, and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils


solve health, attitude, and learning problems.


4. Supervises pupils in out of classroom activities during the assigned working day.


5. Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs within the school of assignment and/or on a


district leave. Teach under modular or flexible scheduling plans.


6. Performs basic attendance accounting and business services as required.


7. Shares in the sponsorship of student activities and participates in faculty committees.


8. May plan and coordinate the work of aids, teacher assistants, or other paraprofessionals.


9. Other Duties as assigned.


F. Must have the Ability to:


1. Adapt plans and instructional delivery to meet the differentiated needs of students.

3. Create an instructional program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth.

4. Monitor students in classrooms, on school grounds and off-campus for school related activities.

6. Operate a computer and job related equipment.

7. Read, interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

8. Maintain current knowledge of applicable curriculum and school instruction related regulations.

9. Establish and maintain a variety of accurate record keeping and filing systems.

10. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

11. Maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance.


G. Must have the Physical Ability to:

1 Either: walk, run and/or stand for extended periods of time in outdoor or indoor facilities depending on the


selected activity.

2 Push, pull, and transport athletic related equipment up to 25 lbs.

3 Physically demonstrate and model the physical stamina and skills necessary for physical education activities.


4 Communicate so others will be able to clearly understand a normal conversation.

5 Understand speech at normal levels.

6 Withstand loud noise from participants and spectators.

7 Bend, twist, stoop, and reach.

8 Drive a personal vehicle to conduct business.


H. Must have the Mental Capacity to:

1. Organize and coordinate schedules

5. Read, analyze and interpret printed matter and computer screens

3. Ability to either: walk, run and/or stand for extended periods of time with exposure to seasonal outdoor


temperatures and weather conditions.

4. Ability to work at a desk and in meetings of various configurations.


J. Education and Experience:

1. Bachelor’s Degree or higher

2. Successful completion of student teaching at a recognized college or university, or two years of regular full


time elementary experience.


3. Valid California Teaching credential (Physical Education Authorization)


K. Certification Requirements:


1. CPR/First Aid Certificate


2. CLAD Certification


3. Must possess a valid California driver’s license.
