JOB DESCRIPTION


CLASSIFICATION: CONFIDENTIAL/MANAGEMENT WORK YEAR: 12M/247D/8HR


LOCATION: TRANSPORTATION SALARY SCHEDULE: 20


SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Director of Transportation


SUPERVISION EXERCISED: As assigned


A. General Description of Position Goals


Under general direction of the Director of Transportation to schedule and route school buses; to receive, log and


dispatch equipment and drivers for field trips; to provide direction, guidance, technical expertise, training and


motivation to assigned staff in all aspects of their employment; to do other related work as required.


B. Essential Job Functions


1. Directs, supervises, monitors and evaluates work of assigned staff.

2. Assists the Director with reports, budgets and special studies as assigned.

3. Prepares, reviews, evaluates and updates procedures and manuals.

4. Keeps the Director informed of status, accomplishments, problems and needs related to assigned area of


responsibility.


5. Establishes bus routes and schedules; reviews routes and adjusts as necessary; maintains updated trip board;

assigns cover drivers; assigns field trips.


6. Ensures drivers are trained and qualified.

7. Receives and responds appropriately to calls from parents and others; provides routine information to others.

8. Maintains records on materials, pupils, mileage, field trips, equipment, operation and assigned personnel.

9. Monitors breakdowns and accidents to prevent interruption of service, coordinates bus repairs between the drivers


and the shop.


10. Operates a variety of machines and equipment such as telephone, calculator, two-way radio, computer and District

vehicles.


11. In the temporary absence of the Director, may assume certain Director-level responsibilities related to assigned

area.


12. Be on call for emergencies 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

13. Other related duties as assigned.


C. Job Requirements/Qualifications:
1. Education: Associates Degree in Supervision and Management OR to have a combination of demonstrated

education and experience considered by the Administrative and Governing Board to provide the ability to perform


successfully in this position.


2. Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of supervisory and dispatch experience, preferably in a school district

setting.


3. Desired Qualifications: Ability to communicate effectively in English and Spanish.


4. Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing:


  • Valid California Driver’s License (Class B or higher)

  • Passenger/School Bus Driver Endorsement

  • Valid School Bus Driver Certificate

  • Valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate

  • Valid Minimum Liability Car Insurance

  • TB Test Clearance

  • Current First Aid Certificate acceptable to CA Highway Patrol

  • Air Brake Endorsement

  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance

D. Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:
Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; communicate effectively both orally and in writing;


demonstrate ability to motivate others to work as a team and to be accepted as a capable leader; demonstrated


ability to develop clear, concise instructions and procedures; be tactful, use good judgment, exhibit integrity and


resourcefulness; apply established policies and procedures on a fair and equitable basis; dependable, industrious


and in good physical condition; understand the principals of a student transportation program and the techniques


of scheduling, routing and dispatching of equipment and drivers; work confidentially with discretion.


E. Working Conditions:
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to us hands to


touch, handle or feel objects, tools or controls and to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit. The


employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel,


crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds individually or with


assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include lose vision, distance vision, color vision,


peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The physical demands described here are


representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this

Work Environment: Employees in this classification, work outdoors in different weather conditions, may


require exposure to extreme weather conditions for moderate periods of time with exposure to minor contagious


illnesses (colds, flu, etc.) in direct contact with public and other District staff. Other atmospheric conditions


include fumes and odors (copier supplies); dust (dust and paper dust). The noise level in the work environment is


usually moderate to loud. The work environment characteristic described here are representative of those an


employee encounter while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be
