A. General Description of Position Goals:
The Student Assistance Program Counselor provides educational counseling, guidance and related services,
under the direction of the school principal or other school administrator, which will result in students’
maximum progress towards individual and district’s educational goals.
B. Essential Job Functions
Assist with the provision of in-service training of school district staff concerning substance abuse issues
and other state-mandated topics including suicide, physical/sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and
bullying;
Assist the district in revising and implementing substance abuse policies and procedures, as well as other
policies including suicide, physical/sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and bullying;
Coordinate the implementation of programs and events offered in the district that are related to alcohol
and drug prevention (DARE, skill-building programs, motivational speakers, peer leadership) as well as
programs and classroom presentations on suicide, physical/sexual abuse, sexual harassment, bullying,
and other related topics.
Serve as an information resource for substance abuse curriculum development and instruction;
Provide counseling services to pupils regarding substance abuse and other behavioral or mental health
issues; (since this is a big part of the job, and not many others in the district can do it, maybe this and the
next one should go higher on list?)
Refer students and families to appropriate community resources for ongoing behavioral health treatment;
Collaborate with family members to address academic, behavioral, social, and mental health issues
Collaborate with other faculty during Intervention and Referral Services, Student Study Team and “504”
meetings;
Participate in individual case conferencing with teachers, parents, guidance counselors, child study team
members, and administrators;
C. Other Job Duties and Responsibilities
1. Networks with teachers, counselors and school personnel for the purpose of improving the quality of
student outcomes, developing solutions and/or providing information.
2. Participates in in service/staff development programs for the purpose of meeting professional
growth, state/district/credential requirements, within the school of assignment and/or at district level.
3. Shares in the sponsorship of student activities and participates in faculty committees.
4. Performs other related duties as assigned.
JOB DESCRIPTION
D. Job Requirements/Qualifications
1. Experience: Three (3) years of successful classroom teaching experience (Preferred Elementary);
successful experience in one or more of the following assignments: advisor, counselor, class
sponsor, department chairperson, district counselor, district resource teacher, teacher on special
assignment.
2. Education: Bachelor of Arts/Science Degree from an accredited institution of higher learning;
Official Transcripts. Master’s Degree desirable.
3. Credential: Possession of a valid California Credential authorizing service as a School Counselor
4. Other Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing
Compliance with No Child Left Behind Requirements (Original Documents)
Department of Homeland Security I-9 Form completion
TB Test Clearance
Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance
5. Knowledge of:
Age appropriate teaching methods
State curriculum framework for appropriate grade level
