The USDA Forest Service has legislative authority to recruit and fill Permanent (Career/Career-Conditional), Temporary, and Term Appointments under the USDA Demonstration Project. Under this authority, any U.S. citizen may apply.
There are two (2) positions located in the Pacific Southwest Region (Region 5) on the San Bernardino National Forest. There is one (1) on the on the Front County Ranger District with a duty location of Lytle Creek, CA; One (1) on the San Jacinto Ranger District with a duty location of Idyllwild, CA.

This is a Forestry Technician (Recreation) on the Recreation Staff on the San Bernardino National Forest. The position is responsible for overseeing maintenance of recreation sites and collecting recreation site fees. TRAVEL REQUIRED

Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959. DUTIES:
Assures recreation sites and areas with one or two major uses are operated and maintained in accordance with operation and maintenance plans. Schedules daily activities, establishes maintenance schedules, and inspects cleanup operations based on recreation operation and maintenance plans. Oversees the construction and maintenance of trails. Monitors the condition and use of trails.
Inspects recreation areas, areas of concentrated public use, and special use permits for compliance with the permit and the management plans, public health, and safety. Performs safety hazard analyses of public recreation use areas and takes or recommends corrective action.
Patrols wilderness to ensure areas are operated, used and maintained in accordance with Wilderness Management Plan. Serves as a unit fee collection officer.
Collects, compiles and summarizes information for recreation data management systems.
Provides detailed information about recreation opportunities to Forest visitors and explains the Forest Service rules and regulations QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered for this position. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications that are based on education above the high school level. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the appropriate experience requirements. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
GS-5: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 grade level; bachelor’s degree or 4 years of successfully completed education above high school (120 semester/180 quarter hours) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources, outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science (no more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable). The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.
Examples of specialized experience are: Inspected recreation area clean-up operations and performed safety hazard analysis of public recreation use areas; patrolled wilderness to ensure that areas were operated, used, and maintained in accordance with wilderness management plans; performed site maintenance, including cleanup and naturalizing at widely dispersed sites; gathered, compiled, and reported recreation program data for use in monitoring and assessment activities and summarized data for use in recreation data management systems.

This evaluation is based on the level of your experience, education, and/or training as determined by your responses to the Occupational Questionnaire.
